Golden Jubilee celebrations of State formation to be grand affair

Bangalore, June 15 (UNI) The Karnataka government will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the State's formation in a befitting manner by highlighting its glory and achievements to the rest of the country and world, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy announced today.

Addressing a gathering of intellectuals, renowned writers, artists and leading lights from various walks of life, after inaugurating the official office of the 'Suvarna Karnataka Office' at the Kannada Bhavan here, he said he would take pro-active steps to popularise the Kannada language across the state, especially remote and border areas.

Karnataka was celebrating its 50th year of formation after reorganisation of the state, merging Kannada speaking areas of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

Mr Kumaraswamy assured that in this year of 'Suvarna Karnataka,' the government would honour an eminent literary personality with the title 'Raashtrakavi.' The title was earlier conferred on late literrateurs Govinda Pai and K V Puttappa.

Mr Kumaraswamy said the government would soon take a decision on making teaching of Kannada as a subject compulsory in English medium schools and vice versa.
