Chennai, Jun 14: The national convention of all the trade unions in the country, irrespective of their political affiliation, will be held at New Delhi in August next to discuss future course of action against the Congress led UPA Government's anti-people, anti-labour policies.

All India General secretary of the AITUC Gurudas Das Gupta told newsmen here today that the proposed convention would also chalk out the programme for a nation wide strike.

He said the AITUC was continuing its discussions with the INTUC and inviting it to participate in the convention.

He said if the INTUC agreed to take part, the AITUC will invite the BJP led Bharathiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) also for the convention.

To a question, he said '' we are going on an all out offensive against the government's anti-working class policy. The AITUC was planning a nation wide strike during the first week of August.

He said the AITUC had a 12-point charge sheet against the UPA Government, including its failure to keep up its promise to restore the higher interest rate on Public Provident Fund (PPF) and to bring a comprehensive legislaton to protect the interest of farm labourers and workers in unorganised sectors though it was mentioned in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). The price of food grains had reached an all time high, the Government's move to privatise the fundamental services like banking sector, including retail banking and clearing of cheques, disinvestment of banks and Public sector undertakings (PSUs), neglecting the farmers interest by not arranging economic price for the agricultural produces and no concrete steps for solving unemployment.

He said due to the anti-farmers attitude of the Government, so far 15,000 farmers had committed suicide in different parts of the country. Referring to the unemployment problem, he said several new industries were coming but there were no job opportunities. If this was the situation, what would be the fate of the 17 crore unemployed, opined Mr Gupta.
