Chandigarh, Jun 14 (UNI) The Haryana government has decided to expedite the work on the Rs 425 crore Rajiv Gandhi Augmentation Drinking Water Programme in Mewat area so as to complete it earlier than its scheduled completion in 2008.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda directed the Public Health Department to accelerate the pace of work for implementation of the project.

Mr Hooda, while reviewing the implementation of various projects, said work on the various components of this priority project, should be taken up simultaneously so that the people in Mewat get its benefit at the earliest.

While 75 per cent of the funds are being provided by National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) as loan, the remaining 25 per cent of the cost is being borne by the State Government.

As many as 76 villages have already been benefitted during last financial year and 87 villages would be covered during current financial year under the project.

The project is being implemented in a phased manner and its first phase would cost Rs 205.91 crore. It would benefit 503 villages by providing 55 liters per capita per day water to a population of 2019.
