HC seeks detailed ATR from police against quack at Govandi
Mumbai, June 14 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today directed the State to file an action taken report (ATR) in response to a public interest litigation filed regarding action to be taken against a quack practicing in Govandi in northeast Mumbai.
A division bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and A S Bagga directed the state to file its affidavit in four weeks following an appeal filed by Mr Mariappa Gangu against Sunita Patil Clinic where he had taken his wife for delivery.
Ms Shanamma Gangu, was taken to the clinic on November 30, 1998 where Dr Sunita, who claimed to hold the degree in BHMS, delivered the child. When she realised that Shanamma was pregnant with twins, without cutting the chord of the first child, she instructed her to be taken to the nearest municipal hospital.
Shanamma was taken to the Shatabadi Hospital where she passed away along with the second child in the womb. After the delivery of the first child, there was immense bleeding and the second infant had already died in the womb.
While the post mortem report stated that she died due to negligence and haemorrhage, the reason for the excessive bleeding was not disclosed.
Mariappa filed a petition praying the court to take action against Sunita Patil Clinic in Govandi and such other quacks by the police and a detailed investigation be carried out in the matter by an independent machinery.
