Eight dead as Asom flood deteriorates
Guwahati, Jun 14(UNI) Eight people have been killed even as flood condition deteriorated in Asom with all the rivers flowing above the danger mark.
Overall flood situation in Asom remained grim today with rivers inundating vast crop lands and human habitation, affecting thousand of lives and disrupting road and rail communication.
With four fresh deaths, three in Cachar and one in Barpeta district yesterday, the toll in floods and land slides related incidents in the state have gone up to eight. Three persons lost their lives due to landslides at Bandershal in Cachar district on Tuesday last, while one drowned in Tinsukia in the first wave of floods.
Both rail and road communication from Barak valley to rest of the state has remained cut-off for the third day today due to severe landslides at several places on NH 44. Even air services from Silchar has also been disrupte due to bad weather, official sources said.
Meanwhile, the mighty Brahmaputra and its all tibutories ard flowing above their danger levels inundating vast crops land and human habitation rendering several thousand population homeless. The affected people have been shifted to the temporary tlief camps and make shift camps.
All rivers in Barak valley, including Barak river and its tributaries, are also flowing above their danger levels flooding vast human habitation and inundating vast crop lands. Three days' gratuitous relief has been granted to the families affected by the flash flood that washed away houses and properties in Haticherra garden area, official sources said.
A breach of around 125-150 metrs length occurred on the dyke of river Nona in Kamrup district of Lower Asom. Eleven villages have been affected in Rangiya circle due to inundtion caused by the swelling water of the river Nona and Borolia. Affected people are moving to higher and safer places. Jayantipur and Borkuriha villages have been mostly affected in the area.
Floods water of River Borolia has also caused a breach of about 100 metre at Goreswar affecting one village. Ten village under Kamalpur revenue circle have been afeted due to rising of river Borolia which has also overtopped roads at some places. Severe erosion was going on in the river banks of Puthimari, the repot said.
Water level of one of the Kopili dams at Khamdomdang in Nagaon has reached 721.95 metres against 719.33 m danger mark. Release of excess water might cause flash floods in the downstreams in the distict .
