Shahidul-Islam among 20 Hurriyat leaders arrested in Srinagar
Srinagar, JunE 13 (UNI) About 20 leaders of the Hurriyat Conference (Omar), including Shahidul-Islam, were taken into preventive custody for violating prohibitory orders here today.
Official sources said police resorted to batoncharge to disperse leaders and workers of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) when they were proceeding towards Lal Chowk in a procession from Rajbagh headquarter.
The HC activists were protesting against the desecration of mosque and killing of two youth by the security forces in Kupwara district.
Sources said when the processionists reached Zero bridge, police stopped them. However, when they insisted to move forward, police resorted to batoncharge.
Shahidul Islam and Mohammad Altaf Ahmad Dar were injured in the police action.
Later, police arrested about 20 people and detained them in Rajbagh police station.
Islam, spokesman of the HC chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, said they were scheduled to sit on dharna at Lal Chowk aginst the Trehgam incident.
