Mumbai, Jun 13: A local court today directed the police to produce Pravin Mahajan, accused of killing BJP leader and his elder brother Pramod Mahajan, tomorrow to enable the court to examine his mental status to decide the defence plea for conducting a psychiatric test.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate B L Waghmare reserved his order till tomorrow, the expiry of Pravin's judicial remand.

On the previous occasion, his judicial custody was extended in absentia being cross examination through video-conferencing as there was a technical fault in the instrument.

Pravin's counsel A N Rajurkar argued the police has failed to establish the motive behind the crime. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a psychiatric test on the accused to find out his mental status at the time of the crime.

He also said on the previous occasion, the court had turned down his plea three times without hearing his side.

He urged the court for a direction to the jail authority to send the accused for this test as the court was empowered in this regard under section 156 of the CrPC.

While opposing the plea, Public Prosecutor E B Dhamal contended that the accused was regularly examined by the panel of doctors in the Government run J J Hospital.

He said that doctors, who had examined him, found him normal and did not suggest any psychiatric test and treatment.
