Exporters body seeks corporation status for Tirupur
Tirupur, Jun 13 (UNI) A delegation including Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) president A Sakthivel today met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at Chennai and gave a memorandum requesting him to upgrade Tirupur Municipality into a corporation and shift the Superintendent of Police (Rural) from Coimbatore to here.
A TEA press release said knitwear garment export from here touched Rs 8,000 crore and was marching to the Rs 10,000 crore milestone by 2007 end. The present resident population of the town had already touched eight lakh and the floating population was more than 50,000.
There was no doubt that with the current trend in capacity expansion and investment in Tirupur, in the near future population would go up further and infrastructure would be inadequate.
This was the right time for the Tamil Nadu government to upgrade Tirupur municipality into a corporation after including adjoining areas, the team said, and requested the Chief Minister to do the needful before conducting Panchayat elections. This would enable the town to get an opportunity to elect a mayor to the new corporation.
Also requesting the appointment of an SP for Tirupur, the memorandum said Tirupur had been witnessing untoward incidents often and these had to be curbed with a firm hand.
