TN, M'htra, WB log high growth of enterprises

New Delhi, June 12: The Economic Census 2005, released here today, brings out the skewed nature of industrialisation in India with just five states together accounting for nearly 50 per cent of total enterprises in the country.

According to the provisional figures of Fifth Economic Census released by Statistics and Programme Implementation Minister G K Vasan rptg G K Vasan here, of the total 42.12 million enterprises in the country, Tamil Nadu accounted for 4,446,999 units (10.56 per cent), followed by Maharashtra with 4,374,767 (10.39 per cent), West Bengal - 4,285,688 (10.17 per cent), Andhra Pradesh - 4,023,411 (9.55 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh - 4,015,926 (9.52 per cent).

Not surprisingly, the five states also were front rankers in providing employment. Maharashtra was ranked first among states with 11,826,566 jobs (11.95 per cent). It was followed by Tamil Nadu with 9,866,633 (9.96 per cent), West Bengal 9,318,026 (8.96 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh 8,540,038 (8.63 per cent), the Census shows.

Among the union territories, Delhi, Chandigarh and Pondicherry led with 753,795, 65,906 and 49,915 enterprises respectively.

There were major surprises in the top five states in the categories of growth in enterprises and growth in total employment.

Mizoram was number one among states charting 9.60 per cent growth in enterprises. Kerala was next with 8.93 per cent, Tripura was third with 8.79 per cent.

Highest growth in employment was seen in Jammu and Kashmir which displayed a 6.82 per cent growth. Employment was also up in Sikkim (5.52 per cent), Kerala (5.39 per cent), Haryana (5.12 per cent) and Tripura (5.07 per cent).
