Chandigarh has highest per capita vehicles in country

Chandigarh, June 12 (UNI) The Union Territory of Chandigarh which ranks number one in the country in terms of per capita income, also leads in the per capita vehicles (per household) There are three vehicles including four wheelers and motorised two wheelers per household in the UT, as per the official statistics.

Two years back, the per capita vehicles was two vehicles per household which has now increassed to three. This figure does not include buses, mini buses and trucks.

According to 'Chandigarh in Figures-2005'and 'Statistical Abstract-2005' compiled by Ms Raji P Shrivastava, Joint Secretary (Finance), UT Administration, the total number of vehicles in 2005 were 5,93,326. This includes 1,62,263 four wheelers, excluding trucks and buses and 4,31,063 two wheelers, that is scooters, motorcycles an mopeds.

The data released also had interesting figures of the number of new tractors registered in the UT. Only three new tractors were registered in the year 2005. The total number of tractors registered in the last three years of 2003, 2004, 2005 were four, five and three respectively.

In comparison the number of cars and jeeps registered last year was 10,265 with the UT administration. In 2003, about 8,471 cars/ jeeps were registered while in 2004 this figure stood at 9,555. As Chandigarh is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana and also close to Himachal Pradesh, a large number of vehicles owned by residents in the city bear the registration numbers of these three states.

The number of four wheelers in 2001, 2003, 2004 were 1,26,003, 1,42,443 and 1,51,996 respectively. The number of two wheelers in the above mentioned years were 3,61,375, 3,94, 606 and 4,11,847 respectively.
