Panaji, June 12 (UNI) Goa deputy chief minister in-charge of science and environment Dr Wilfred de Sousa today inaugurated a state-of-the-art, three dimensional theatre to exhibit 3D films and a travel exhibition 'A Century of Physics' as part of science popularisation drive at the Goa Science Centre (GSC) here.

Half of the Rs 70 lakh cost to construct the theatre was borne by the state's ministry of science and technology and environment. The remaining half was borne by the government of India's National Council of Science Museums.

Very few states in the country have this facility, while it is mostly confined to metropolitan areas. There are 21 science centres at the national, regional and sub-regional level, according to the GSC incharge Dr V N Joshi.

Dr De Souza, who had witnessed three thrilling films on Shark Island, Funny Animal and Master of Magic, said he would direct the tourism department to include the GSC in the tourism map of Goa to promote scientific temper.

Inaugurating a travel exhibition earlier at the GSC, Dr De Souza urged authorities to make replicas of the exhibits that displayed 'A Century of Physics' to commemorate publication of Albert Einstein's Quantum Theory, Special Theory of Relativity and Theory of Brownian Motion that revolutionised study of physics later.

The exhibits highlights the life and major works of Einstein and the discoveries in the field of electromagnetic radiation, X-Rays, radioactivity, cosmology, proportions of matter, semiconductors, integrated circuits and lasers.

Speaking on the occasion Nehru Science Centre Director Mumbai Dr G S Rautela said all the future science exhibitions, after developing, would be handed over to the respective states for maintaining them.

Shiva and Chota Chetan were the only 3-D films at the commercial level and more such films particularly on science should be produced to educate the masses on science to promote scientific temper.

Regretting drifting of the students from pure sciences to enginering and medicine, Dr Rautela said there was a need to reverse this trend and exhibitions could play a vital role in this direction so that the premier research institutions such as ISRO did not lack talent.

Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion were director of the state department of S&T and Environment Sr N P S Varde and director of the premier National Institute of Oceanography here Dr Satish R Shetye.

Scores of school children thronged the 3-D theatre to witness the shows, which were open on tickets. They would be given polaroid glasses to witness the shows.
