Petro Hike : Jaya wants Karunanidhi to reduce Sales Tax

Chennai, June 11 (UNI) AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa today asked Tamil Nadu Chief M Karunanidhi to act on the suggestions he gave when in the opposition and reduce the sales tax on petrol and diesel and bring down the fares of State Express Transport Corporations (SETCs) on par with Railway fares.

''People should understand the double standards of Mr Karunanidhi, who is talking in one voice while in opposition and in another as the Chief Minister,'' she said in a statement here, referring to the DMK chief rejecting her idea of reduction in the sales tax saying it would lead to a hike in bus fares.

She also pointed to the Centre's proposal to the states asking them to consider reducing the sales tax to reduce the hike in prices of diesel and petrol. ''This is the expectation of the people of Tamil Nadu from the DMK governemnt,'' she said.

She also reminded Mr Karunanidhi of one of the promises made by him in the past on bringing down the fares of SETCs on all routes on par with second class Railway fares.

''Will he do it. Mr Karunanidhi before the elections is different from Mr Karunanidhi after the elections. If both the Karunanidhis are one and the same, he should immediately reduce the prices of diesel and bring the fares of SETC buses on par with Railway fares,'' she added.
