Haryana to lay emphasis on destitute children

Chandigarh, June 11 (UNI) The Haryana government has earmarked Rs 89.20 lakh during the current financial year under an ambitious scheme being implemented for the welfare of destitute children in need of care and protection.

While stating this today, state Social Welfare Minister Ms Kartar Devi said the Social Welfare Department has been providing grant-in-aid to the voluntary organisations for the maintenance of orphaned or destitute children. Under this scheme, a recurring expenditure at a rate of Rs 600 per child per month was being provided for maintenance of inmates as grant-in-aid.

She said while the department has been providing 90 per cent grant-in-aid on 10 per cent sharing basis, the voluntary organisation provides free boarding and lodging, clothing and education through schools to orphaned or destitute children.

She said as many as 830 children were benefited and a sum of Rs 81.37 lakh was provided as grant-in-aid to 17 voluntary organisations during the last financial year.

The department also provided grant-in-aid to a few voluntary organisations for salary of staff, repair of buildings and expenditure regarding education of inmates, she said.
