CPI welcomes sales tax waiver in TN

Chennai, Jun 11 (UNI) The Communist Party of India today welcomed the 45 paise waiver of Sales tax on the increased price of diesel announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

In a statement here, CPI State Secretary Tha Pandian said consequent to this waiver, the Lorry owners too should chip in by reducing their rents and help the public.

He said the Centre's recent hike of petrol and diesel prices had resulted in an increase in prices of vegetables and essential commodities.

The Centre did not accept the alternative proposal suggested by the left parties and in turn suggested to the States to reduce the Sales tax and other taxes on Petrol and diesel.

Mr Pandian accused the Centre of not willing to take any steps to mitigate the sufferings of the people. ''Under these circumstances, the Tamil Nadu government's decision to waive the sales tax on the increased price of diesel is a welcome step'', he added.
