New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) A city court has rejected the bail plea of Delhi-based businessman, who was arrested by the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on charges of allegedly evading a huge amount of customs duty.

Patiala House Court Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Kamini lau, rejected the bail plea of Ahup Joshi on Wednesday.

Joshi, the proprietor of two firms--Ashna Creations and Ashna Exports--was arrested by the DRI on May 22.

The DRI alleged that the two firms were involved in availing fraudulent benefits by submitting wrong declarations of the Customs and Excise duty under the provisions of Customs Act, which made a huge loss to the Government exchequer to the tune of Rs 4 crore, according to the prosecution.

''Keeping in view the extent of violations and the fact that the inquiry for the fraudulent exports are yet pending besides the possibility of other people being involved in the scam, no ground for bail is made out,'' Ms Lau said in her order.

Joshi was arrested under Sections 115 (i) (c) of the Customs Act.
