Vieira will be ready, says France coach

HAMELIN, Germany, June 10 (Reuters) Midfielder Patrick Vieira will be ready for the World Cup and will play an important role in the tournament, France coach Raymond Domenech said today.

Vieira has looked sluggish in warm-up games and French media have questioned the fitness of the 29-year-old, who participated in France's triumphant campaigns at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

''I know he is being criticised but it surprises me,'' Domenech told a news conference at France's training camp in northern Germany.

''Not only am I certain that we will be able to rely on him but I'm also convinced he will be one of the strong men of this World Cup.

Vieira joined Juventus last year after nine seasons at Arsenal and struggled to adapt, notably because of a groin injury.

''He is one of the players who have improved the most physically during our preparations,'' Domenech said.

''I know his qualities, I know his character and I know we can fully trust him.'' REUTERS PDS BD2102
