Textile industry to play improtant role in Indian economy : Kalam

Hyderabad, June 10 (UNI) President APJ Abdul Kalam today asserted that the textile industry, which has the potential of 18 to 20 billion dollar export market in the next five years, would create more than five million direct jobs and seven million indirect jobs in allied sector in future.

Addressing the Industrialists at a programme organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here, Dr Kalam said, ''We have to increase cotton production from 350 kg seed cotton per acre to 700 kg was the world average by adoting new technology and providing value addition to the cotton growers to increase earning capacity in the textile sector.

Linking the cotton production to garment export business which has low investment but generates lot of employment, the President said the state governments should make efforts to adopt cotton reasearch, technology generation, transfer of technology, modernization and upgrading of ginning and pressing factories and aggressive marketing strategy.

Identifying five areas, which would transform the country into a developed nation and bring prosperity to all the people, Dr Kalam said agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, information and communication technology, infrastructure and self reliance in strategic sectors are the biggest challenges before the nation to move towards achieving ''national mission''.

The five areas were closely inter-related and effectively addressed, which would lead to food, economic, energy and national security and lead to sustainable prosperity, he added.
