Kolkata, June 10 (UNI) The UPA Government is expected to shortly seek to enact a legislation for reclycling of electrical and electronic equipment to arrest the high level e-waste in the country.

Speaking at a seminar on waste from electronic and electrical equipment, West Bengal Pollution Control Board Chairman Sudip Kumar Banerjee today said the draft of the Bill had already been firmed up and it would be placed in the House in the next session.

According to the draft Bill, owners of all manufacturing companies would have to clear all products and recycle them before launching new products in the market.

"The manufacturers will have to collect the old equipment from consumers for a nominal fee and send them for recycling," he said.

Giving statistics, Mr Chatterjee said Mumbai was the largest producer of e-waste in the country with an annual accumulated quantity of 11,000 tons followed by Delhi with 10,000 tons, Bangalore 4,600 tons, Chennai 4,300 tons and Kolkata 4,000 tons. The e-wastes produced in the country was three times more than that of all other wastes, he said.

In reply to a question the PCB Chairman said the centrally funded incinerator for non-toxic wastes in West Bengal's Haldia would be operational by this year end.

The programme, organised by Bengal Chamber of Commerce, was attended among others by West Bengal Information Technology Minister Mohanta Chatterjee and IT Secretary G.D.Gautama.
