Rumour of fatal attack on jailed don-turned-MLA Mukhtar Ansari

Ghazipur, UP, June 9 (UNI) Commotion prevailed here following the spread of rumours of a fatal attack on incarcerated don-turned-Independent MLA from Mau in Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Ansari -- lodged in Ghazipur district jail.

Additional police superintendent H N Singh, however, denied any such incident and claimed it to be a mere rumour.

Jail sources also confirmed that no such incident had occurred.

Meanwhile, DIG D D Mishra took stock of the security in the jail.

Ansari, his ruling Samajwadi Party MP elder brother Afzal Ansari and brother-in-law Ejaj are prime accused in the murder case of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. The trio are lodged in Ghazipur jail.

Mukhtar and 32 others are also accused in Mau communal riots, which had rocked the district on October 14, 2005 during a 'Bharat Milap' ceremony.

Rai, an MLA from Mohammadabad assembly constituency in Ghazipur district, and his seven supporters were shot dead in broad daylight in Ghazipur on November 29 last year.

They were ambushed near the Ballia-Ghazipur border by several motorcycle-borne miscreants armed with sophisticated weapons.

Later, an FIR was lodged against 10 persons including Mukhtar, Afzal and notorious east UP gangster Munna Bajrangi in connection with the killing. Afzal surrendered in the court on December 8.
