Ninth Police Martyr's Memorial football cup from tomorrow

Srinagar, June 9 (UNI) As many as 32 teams will take part in the ninth Police Martyr's Memorial Football Tournament, beginning here tomorrow.

Addressing a news conference here today, Additional Director General of Police (Armed) P S Gill said the teams include Border Security Force (BSF) Jalandhar, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Haryana Police, CRPF Delhi, RCF Kapurthala, RPF, SSB Delhi, YMCA club and Safalo club.

Haryana Police, RCF Kapurthala and RPF would take part in the tournament for the first time, he added.

The championship, organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, will be played at the Bakshi Stadium here.

Last year, the tournament was won by BSF Jalandhar defeating Jammu and Kashmir Bank three goals to nil in the finals.

Mr Gill said in all 32 teams from the state and outside would participate in the tournament. The matches would be played on the knock-out basis under the auspices of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA), he added.

The tournament was instituted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1998 in memory of Inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Baba who laid down his life while defusing a car bomb at Srinagar. Since then the state police has been holding the tournament regularly.
