Monsoon weakens, incessant rains continues to lash Bihar

New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) People in north-west and central India are in for an extended dry spell as the southwest monsoon has weakened and is unlikely to revive over the next 8-10 days even as incessant rains continued to lash Bihar throwing life out of gear.

Incessant rain claimed the life of a young girl when she drowned in a submerged manhole at Rajendra Nagar in Patna last evening, while a multi storied apartment crumbled on Boring canal road.

After a brief tryst with cool weather last week, the mercury in the capital shot up to 42.8 degrees Celsius today, nearly three degrees above normal.

Infact, it was the first time since the last ten days that the mercury has crossed the 42 degrees mark. It was a sharp rise, from 41.4 degrees Celsius yesterday.

A mainly clear sky and bright sunlight led to searing hot conditions, forcing most people to remain indoors.

Intense hot weather conditions persisted in most parts of north-western parts following further rise in the mercury hovering one degree to four degrees Celsius above normal.

The maximum temperature soared to 43.9 degrees Celsius at Hissar, turning it the hottest place in Haryana. Ambala recorded 41.7 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal.

In Punjab, Amritsar and Ludhiana were the hottest places with the mercury touching 43.0 degrees celsius, two degrees above normal, at these places. Patiala showed one degree above normal temperature at 42.1 degrees celsius.

The Met office has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and mainly sunny day in Haryana and Punjab tomorrow.

With the pre-monsoon showers receding, hot and humid conditions returned in Rajasthan. According to the Met office the temperature hovered between 40-43 degrees Celsius.
