ACA, ACC donate Rs 29 lakh for eradication of blindness
Johannesburg, June 9 (UNI) The Africa Cricket Association in conjunction with the Asia Cricket Council has announced the donation of 430,000 rands (Rs 29 lakh approximately) to Sight Savers International for the eye care programmes in the developing world and the eradication of blindness.
This sponsorship was made possible due to the staging of the Afro-Asia Series in South Africa in 2005, of which 10 percent of the profits was allocated to charity.
''This is the start of major things to come to enable the Afro-Asia Series and cricket generally to give back to humanity in the form of charity globally,'' Afro-Asia Cricket Committee (AACC) chairman Sharad Pawar was quoted as a saying in a South African Cricket Board statement.
AACC vice chairman Peter Chingoka said, ''We are delighted with the contribution made to Sight Savers International to assist them in their exceptional work towards the eradication of blindness in Africa and Asia.'' Chingoka congratulated the AACC Executive Committee for their foresight in assisting charitable organisations like this world wide.
