Vehicular movt on highway affected due to economic blockade
Imphal, Jun 8 (UNI) About 100 trucks were stranded at the Manipur-Nagaland border area on National Highway 39 following a local student body sponsored economic blockade which entered the third day today.
The Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) called the blockade, demanding selection of local candidates as teachers for the schools in hilly areas of Manipur.
The SDSA contended that some non-local teachers were appointed.
The state government has appointed teachers on ad-hoc basis for the hilly districts as there were large number of vacant posts.
The SDSA had earlier called an economic blockade which was called off after the government assured to fulfil their demands.
Another highway blockade would begin tonight on the same highway in the Imphal-Moreh area.
The blockade has been called by All Tribal Womens' Organisation, Kuki Students' Organisation, Kuki Women's Human Rights demanding action against security personnel for allegedly taking away goods and money during an operation at Chandel district recently.
Bishenpur police, however, said goods of a militant group were seized.
