Two uranium enrichment plants on anvil in AP: Kakodkar

Hyderabad, June 8 (UNI) Two new uranium enrichment plants will be constructed at Nalgonda and Kadapa after receiving environment and forest clearances, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Secretary to Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Dr Anil Kakodkar said today.

Speaking to newspersons here, Dr Kakodkar said the two uranium plants would be constructed at an estimate cost of Rs 1000 crore and 600 crore respectively in three years.

He said the DAE besides giving priority to Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya on uranium explorations was also concentrating on Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

He said a R and D unit would be set up at Visakhapatnam at the earliest.

DAE Additional Secretary V P Raja said the DAE was planning to invest massively in Andhra Pradesh to explore more uranium.

Mr Raja said the government had set a target of 40,000 MW power from uranium by 2030.

He said DAE would constitute voluntary groups to create awareness among the people about the uranium projects whereever they were established.
