One student killed, 24 others injured in road mishap

Madikeri, Karnataka, June 8 (UNI) A school student was killed on the spot and 24 others were injured, 16 of them seriously, when their school van overturned near Guddehosur, six km from Kushalnagar, last evening.

Police said the mishap occurred as three school vans were being driven recklessly, competing with each other.

The deceased was identified as Nandan Shetty (11), a seventh standard student. Nandan's two sisters were also injured in the accident. The seriously injured have been admitted to different hospitals at Kushalnagar and Madikeri by the parents and public.

Many students, most of them aged around eight years, have lost their limbs and were suffering from fracture and deep cuts.

Tension prevailed as the public turned violent and protested against the incident. Attempts were made to set ablaze the van.

Police forces were sent to the spot and the condition was brought under control.
