Hyderabad, Jun 8 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) national leaders and Chief Ministers of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura today categorically stated that the recent victories of Left democratic parties in West Bengal and Kerala, have proved that left forces are the only alternative for the people of the country to take them into future.

Speaking at a meeting organised to celebrate the victory in West Bengal and Kerala here, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said the left victories in both states enthused the people of the country. He said the secular minded people are looking towards the left to lead them into future. ''The left democratic parties successes in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura need to spread to every corner of the country'', he added.

Mr Karat said people have seen five decades of fascist and undemocratic governments in the country. He said the rule of these governments resulted in mass poverty, sharpening of inequalities and penetration of foreign imperial forces into the country. The need of the hour is that the left and democratic platform should be taken to the people of the country, he suggested.

Mr Karat said people in Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura witnessed the rule of left parties and other parties. He said people supported those parties which stood for and implemented land reforms and brought about a change in the lives of people who are in agriculture sector. Peoples are looking for this alternative path of development which will uplift the standard of majority section of the society, he explained.

Mr Karat said these victories show that people want change. He said this change in the attitude of the people came due to the prolonged struggles left parties in support of the people.

Rajya Sabha MP and CPI (M) Politbureau member Sitaram Yechury said UPA government has been formed due to the support of left. He said these victories should be a fitting answer to all those political parties which predicted several times that there was no future for left parties.

''The left is always blamed for being against the reforms.

We clarified several times that if reforms are pro-people, left never opposed it'', he added.

Mr Yechury said despite economic growth rate going up, the agriculture crisis still continues in the country. He said the growth rate is going up in West Bengal and Kerala and at the same time the conditon of farmers and those in farm sector is improving.

The same situation can prevail in the country, he added.

Mr Yechury said left supported modernisation of airports but not privitisation of airports. He said Left also invited Foreign investment with conditions like increase in job opportunities. ''The left in UPA is playing a sheet anchor role to protect the interests of the people of the country. We are trying to create alternative in the country in support of the people to protest secularism in the country and to protect people from communal forces'', he added.
