''I never compared Rahul with Shyama Prasad Mukharji'': Atal

Gwalior, June 8 (UNI) Describing his earlier comment on the Rahul Mahajan case as ''stemming from a humanitarian viewpoint,'' former premier and senior BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee today said the court's judgement would be universally acceptable.

''Politics and law are separate matters. I see vexation on Rahul's face. While taking a decision regarding any person, the background ought to be kept in mind. If a person goes astray is not society to blame?'' he told journalists at the local airport.

Responding to a query on some party leaders criticising his earlier remark on Rahul Mahajan, the seasoned leader said that persons having varying lines of thought were part of the BJP and were free to speak their mind.

Reacting to criticism by expelled BJP leader Uma Bharti, Mr Vajpayee said, ''I never compared Rahul with Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherji or Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. A person who errs must be prepared to suffer punishment.'' Describing as shocking the resignation of BJP leaders, he however maintained that no relationship would be shared with those who breached discipline.

''Contemplation is imperative. Lacunae are addressed by the party but it takes some time. However, the BJP is doubtlessly advancing on the right path,'' said Mr Vajpayee who was here to attend a wedding.
