Srinagar, June 8 (UNI) A day after five tourists from Maharashtra were killed in a road accident in Kashmir, the authorities here have intensified checking against rash and negligent driving.

An official spokesman said today in view of persistent public demand, a vigorous drive has been launched by the Traffic Police and other agencies concerned to check over-speeding, rash driving and violation of other traffic rules.

''The aim of the drive is to ensure better traffic regulation and provide improved transport facility to the people,'' he added.

In this connection, Special Mobile Magistrate Traffic Kashmir, Syed Tawqeeer Ahmed has been heading an extensive drive and for the first time vehicles of the security forces were also being checked for any violation of traffic norms.

The Traffic Magistrate, during one such inspection, checked 47 vehicles of the CRPF near Bakshi Stadium here. He asked for documents, including pollution under control certificates, from the drivers and inspected the vehicles for pressure horns.

Pressure horns from seven CRPF vehicles were removed on the spot.

''There has been an increase in the number of traffic incidents and the people have been demanding stern action against violators so that precious human lives are saved,'' the spokesman said.

He said the people have appreciated the drive and expressed hope that the drive would go a long way to ''put brakes'' on rash driving, over-speeding and various other traffic offences.
