25 cr fish eggs to be reared in K'taka

Mangalore, June 8 (UNI) The Karnataka Government will take steps to rear 25 crore fish eggs in coastal and inland areas in the next two years to develop fisheries in the State, Mujrai and Fisheries Minister B Nagaraj Shetty has said.

Addressing newspersons here yesterday, he said the Government was also seriously thinking of setting up outlets like Nandini milk booths in the State for selling reared fish. It would also take steps to rear 'Alankarika' fish, which had sufficient demand in the country and even in Israel, in the fisheries college here.

The Minister said that in view of the increasing number of fisheries boats, the Ministry was contemplating to build fisheries port in Hejamady and Ullal in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district in collaboration with foreign firms.

Mr Shetty said dredging work in seven fisheries harbours in the State would commence soon after monsoon.

He said the Government had decided to set up a committee under retired High Court Chief Justice Rama Jois for recommending amendments to the Mujrai Act. The Committee would submit its report within three months, he added.
