US says energy on G8 agenda but no new policy

WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) A senior US Treasury official today said energy prices will be a key topic for finance ministers from rich countries meeting in Russia this weekend but played down expectations they will have any major announcements from it.

''The US position has been that we have energy ministers and we have a heads of state summit (in July) and that anything beyond the issues that we've discussed so far really falls in the lane of the energy ministers,'' the official said ahead of a June 9-10 meeting of Group of Eight finance ministers in St Petersburg.

''So we in the US don't plan on making energy policy,'' the official said even if some other G8 participants might want to ''push the envelope'' by making specific proposals on energy.
