Tamil Councillor stages hunger strike in London on Lankan situatio
London, June 7 (UNI) A Tamil Councillor in the Borough of Harrow, which has the highest population of people from the sub-continent is trying to draw the ''attention of the world'' to the plight of Tamils in Lanka by staging a hunger strike near Parliament Gate here.
Mr Thaya Idaikkadar, 55, a British Citizen of Lankan origin, has not eaten food or had liquid for five days which started at noon June 2. He claimed he was driven to take the desperate measure because of the escalating attacks on Tamil civilians in recent weeks.
''The fragile ceasefire between the Lankan government and Tamil fighters is breaking down and Tamil civilians are being targeted in daily acts of violence and savagery,'' he said.
Mr Idaikkadar said ''the world is ignoring this developing tragedy. If the international community does not act soon we will be guilty of condoning the massacres of innocent civilians. We must intervene and bring both sides to the negotiating table. Otherwise we will continue to see more senseless slaughter.'' It was claimed that as a diabetic and heavily insulin-dependent, the hunger strike could be particularly dangerous for him. He was being attended by a team of doctors working in shifts throughout his vigil.
Mr Idaikkadar said he was well aware of the risks to which he was exposing himself but believed that it was vital to get attention focused on the unfolding disaster.
