TN emerging top broadband user
Madurai, June 06 (UNI) The Public Sector BSNL will soon provide broadband internet connectivity to 400 more towns in Tamil Nadu as part of efforts to make the state the top IT user in the country.
Speaking at a function to give away Sanchar Seva Padak and Sanchar Sarathy Awards here today, BSNL Tamil Nadu Circle Chief General Manager K Sridhara said now only 49 places had the facility.
Extending it to small and medium towns throughout the state would result in a quantum leap in the use of IT and IT-enabled services.
Broadband connectivity in 400 more destinations would give the state the status of having the highest IT coverage in the country, he said.
On B-Phones, he said the over one lakh waiting list had been considerably brought down. Till May end May 45,000 fixed connections had been provided and the rest would be cleared shortly, he added.
Referring to cellular services, Mr Sridhara said 250 mobile towers would be erected in the state in addition to the existing 1750. This was aimed at bringing the entire state under mobile coverage.
Five lakh new Cell One connections would shortly be added to the 16.65 lakh-strong subscriber base of BSNL, he added.
