New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Sultry weather returned to the capital today, after pleasant weather over the weekend, as the mercury rose further to 40 degrees Celsius.

After three days of pleasant weather over the weekend, which saw cool South Easterly winds and a heavily overcast sky plummet the mercury to eight to ten degrees below normal, the mercury, continuing its upwards movement since yesterday, rose to 40 degrees Celsius, from 38.3 degrees Celsius yesterday.

Though the mercury was one degree below normal, bright sunlight, coupled with a humidity level of 30 per cent, led to perspiring conditions.

The sharp rise in mercury, from 31.1 degrees Celsius on Saturday, is largely an offshoot of the decreasing influence of the upper air cyclonic movement which lead to a heavy overcast sky and light rains over the weekend, weathermen said.

Infact, the coming days are likely to witness either an increase in day temperatures or the mercury hovering at the same level as today.

Though the weather office has forecast a partly cloudy sky and thunderstorms accompanied with squalls in some areas in the next 24 hours, they expect the temperature to remain at 40 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

Also, there is little likelihood of heavy rains in the coming days.
