Seven students commit suicide over exam failure

Chennai, Jun 6 (UNI) Seven students, six of them girls, allegedly committed suicide in Tamil Nadu over being unable to bear their failure in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, the results of which were announced yesterday.

While two girls and a boy took the extreme step in the city and its suburbs, two girls committed suicide in Kanniyakumari and two others in Tirunelveli district, reports received here said.

Soon after the results were announced, Sunitha at suburban Avadi went home and set herself on fire. She was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

In a similar incident, Hemalatha burnt herself to death at Pallikaranai, near here. At Indira Nagar in Velachery, a boy hanged himself in his house last evening, police said.

A report from Madurai said four girls committed suicide following their failure to clear the examinations. Two of the victims were from the highly literate Kanniyakumari district while the other two belonged to the adjoining Tirunelveli district.

According to police, P Subashini (16) of Lakshmipuram ingested poisonous seeds while V Manimegalai (15) of Gurukal Madam hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her house late last evening.

In Tirunelveli, M Radhika (17) of Keelkaruvelangulam near Kalakadu and M Rajeswari (15) of Pranur near Shencottah consumed poison.
