NYK to celebrate First struggle of Indian independence anniv

Bhopal, June 6: In a bid to connect youths to the history of independence, the Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) will organise various programmes throughout the year to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857.

NYK Vice-president Meenakshi Natarajan told reporters here yesterday that 'Sanjhi Virasat' programme had been started under the auspices of the Union Culture Ministry and the NYK.

As a part of the programme, workshops on 1857 revolt will be organised and documents pertaining to the revolt be showcased.

She said the movement was concentrated mostly in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand so most programmes will be organised in this region.

Ms Natarajan described removing the chapter on 'Jhansi ki Rani' from school textbooks by the state governments and the Centre as painful. She said she will speak to the governments concerned and try to get the chapter included in the curriculum.
