Mahajan family faces eviction from 7 Safdarjung Road

New Delhi, Jun 6 (UNI) The House Committee of the Rajya Sabha has decided not to allow the family of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan to continue to occupy the official residence at 7 Safdarjung Road, in view of the June 1 'drinks and drugs' party there.

''I have decided to turn down the request made by Ms Rekha Mahajan seeking to extend her stay in the house in light of what happened last week,'' Rajya Sabha House Committee Chairman J P Agarwal today said.

Such things should not happen in government accomodation, he added.

He said he had received a letter from Ms Mahajan last week in this regard.

After Mr Mahajan died on May 2, the family had been allowed to continue living at the house till June 2.

It was normal practice to allow the family of a MP who dies to continue in the house for two months on subsidised rent. Thereafter, the family was allowed to continue for some more time, if needed, but was charged rent at market rate, he said.

But this was at the discretion of the Committee, he added.
