Moga, June 6 (UNI) The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) today criticised the hike in diesel prices and said that this would further put pressure on the agriculture sector which was already in the midst of a crisis.

''The Union government wants the farming community to commit suicide enmass,'' BKU acting chief Manjit Singh Kadian charged while talking to mediapersons here.

He alleged the hike in diesel and petrol prices was aimed at appeasing the oil companies. The prices of petroleum products had been hiked by four times during the last one and half year while the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat and paddy had risen by a few rupees, he said while refering to the high input costs that the farmers were bearing.

Prof Kadian has summoned an emergency meeting of the BKU's state executive on June 10 at Ludhiana to chalkout an action plan following the price hike.
