HC quashes PSC notification

Kochi, June 6 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today quashed a notification of the State Public Service Commission (PSC) prohibiting women from applying for the post of 'village man' in the Revenue Department.

Mr Justice K Balakrishnan Nair held the notification issued by the PSC on December 31, 2005 stating women were not eligible to apply was discriminatory.

He directed the PSC to issue a fresh notification and give women a chance to apply for the post.

In her writ petition, Sheeba Kuttiata of Kannur contended the notification disqualifying women from applying for the post of 'village man' amounted to gender discrimination and violated the fundamental rights of ''equality before law and equal opportunity'' guaranteed by the Constitution.

Though the PSC argued the notification was issued complying with the rules, the court said exclusion of women was irrational.
