DPI urges Left parties to withdraw support to UPA
Chennai, June 6 (UNI) The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) today urged the Left parties to withdraw support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre for steeply hiking the prices of petrol and diesel for the fifth time in two years.
In a statement here, DPI General Secretary Thol Thirumavalavan condemned the hike and said it would adversely affect the poor people.
''Whenever the prices of petrol and diesel are hiked, the Left parties merely lodge a protest and remain silent later. Such stand of the left parties is an attempt to cheat the people'', Mr Thirumavalavan said and demanded the left parties to withdraw their support to the UPA government.
The Centre's argument that the hike in prices of petrol and diesel was inevitable due to rising prices of crude oil in International market was not acceptable, he said and accused the Centre of not taking necessary steps to prevent the hike.
He also urged the Centre to rollback the hike in the interests of the poor people.
