CW Games Federation President satisfied preparations in Delhi

New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell today expressed satisfaction over the pace of preparations for 2010 Commonwealth Games in the national capital.

Mr Fennell along with Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi called on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and said sports lovers from all over the world had high expectations from the capital as they had watched and got glimpse of Delhi during the closing ceremony of 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne.

The presentation made by Delhi government at the finale at Melbourne was superb and was liked by one and all, he said.

He mentioned that Chambers of Indian Industry had apprised him of significant investment made in power sector in the run up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He also stressed the need for coordination between all the stakeholders of the Games to ensure its success.

Mr Fennell disclosed that a Coordination Commission would soon be making its first visit to Delhi to assess the preparations. It would closely monitor the preparations at different level continuously for three days. The Commission would frequently visit Delhi.

Mr Fennell further stressed the need for projecting Delhi on electronic media as the city was going to be showcased during the Games.

He added that people from all over the world were enthusiastic about visiting Delhi during Commonwealth Games and hence arrangements relating to transport, health, water, power must be foolproof.

Ms Dikshit assured Mr Fennell that all deadlines would be met to ensure completion of all arrangements for Commonwealth Games on time.

She admitted that the preparations were not presently visible but would become substantially visible by the beginning of 2009. She disclosed that Delhi Chief Secretary would work as the Nodal Officer and also oversee arrangements of security and police. The work relating to showcasing Delhi had long been initiated.

Accepting that there was a big challenge before her government, she added that we were prepared enough to ensure proper arrangements.

There would be dedicated power supply to all the venues, games village and hotels during the Commonwealth Games, she stated.

Altogether 45 agencies would be involved in the run up for the Games. The Delhi government had also prepared a plan of action for providing smooth transportation, power supply and water supply.

The chief minister said the Prime Minister himself was taking keen interest and had issued directions for monitoring the developments fortnightly.

Ms Dikshit further said a team of dedicated volunteers would be kept ready to facilitate different activities during the Games.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, Chief Secretary R Narayanswami, DTTDC CMD, Principal Secretary Urban Development, Principal Secretary (Health), Secretary (Environment) and senior officials from Transport department, Transco, Discoms, DJB, NDMC and MCD were present at the meeting.
