New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Guidelines must be framed to check e-pollution which is affecting human life and habitation, Prof J Behari, Dean, Environment, Jawaharlal Nehru Univeristy (JNU) said here today.

Electro-Magnetic Radiation is a form of energy released by various instruments and machines, which run on electricity and generate magnetic forces. While a certain extent of that electrical energy is consumed, the excess energy spreads out in the environment in the form of electro-magnetic radiation, he said addressing a meeting.

Scientific research has revealed that hundreds of people experienced worsening of their health problems due to exposure to e-pollution. It could have a major role in higher incidence of illnesses such as depression, insomnia, anxiety, memory loss and the like, he added.

Raising the issue for the first time, the Saraswati Jankalyan Nidhi, a public welfare trust, was working to create awareness among the people about e-pollution as radiation levels need to be controlled before reaching an alarming level.

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed by the trust through its advocate Jagdeep Kishore, in Delhi High Court. The court has issued notices to the various Union Ministries including Communications, Defence, Civil Aviation, Science and Technology and Health and Family Welfare.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice V Jain and Justice K Gambhir have sought status report and responses from various ministries by September 5, he said.

The petition has also sought direction to the manufacturers of the gadgets to confirm to the guidelines framed by the government by keeping the e-pollution within the permissible limits.
