Mizoram sets up taxation gates across borders

Aizawl, Jun 5 (UNI) After achieving huge revenue from the Value Added Tax (VAT), the Mizoram government has further decided to collect systematic taxes by setting up four taxation checkgates across the border areas.

Talking to UNI here today, State Taxation Commissioner T B C Rozara informed that his department had so far established three checkgates, located in Vairengte near Assam-Mizoram border, Lengpui Airport and Melbuk near Indo-Myanmar border at Champhai district, and the fourth one would be shortly be set up at Tlabung, also on the Indo-Myanmar border in south Mizoram.

Asserting the importance of setting up taxation checkgates, Mr Rozara said all goods entering Mizoram could now be systematically recorded.

All the taxation checkgates, headed by a Tax Superintendent, would keep strict vigil on all incoming and outgoing goods, passing through the gate, he said adding these checkgate offices were made under section 61 of the Mizoram VAT 2005.

The Commissioner further pointed out that the state revenue target had been surpassed by Rs 8.35 crore during the 2005-2006 financial owing to the imposition of the value added tax in Mizoram since April 2005.

He said, ''This year Mizoram has been able to meet its share of ten per cent in several Centrally funded schemes due to the VAT revenue.'' UNI SNR SJC SS1130
