Girls outwit boys in SSLC exams despite dip in pass percentage

Chennai, June 5 (UNI) Girls once again outscored boys, while the pass percentage declined marginally in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, results of which were announced today.

There was also slight decline in the overall pass percentage among candidates, which came down to 77.6 per cent from 77.8 per cent last year.

Though there was an increase in the total number of boys and girls passing the examination, there was a dip in pass percentage when compared to last year. A total of 272,666 boys and 291,183 girls passed the exams this year as against 261,193 and 275,640 respectively last year. The pass percentage among boys came down to 74.6 per cent as against 75 per cent of last year and among girls, it was 80.6 per cent when compared to last year's 80.8 per cent.

There was also an increase in the number of candidates securing 60 per cent and above. About 296,401 students secured 60 per cent and above as against 272,724 last year.

The percentage of candidates securing first class also went up to 52.6 per cent as compared to 50.8 per cent of last year, while there was a significant increase in the number of students securing centum in Mathematics. As against 8.054 students last year, 13,033 students got centum this year.

In science it came down to just 65 as against 284 last year, while 112 candidates secured centum in Social Science as compared to six last year.

In the the Oriental School Leaving Certificate (OSLC) examinations, girls outscored boys with 81.01 per cent of girls passing the exams as against 75.03 per cent by boys. Last year, the pass percentage among boys and girls was 77.05 per cent and 85.02 per cent respectively.

In the Anglo-Indian examinations too, there was dip in the pass percentage, with girls once again outnumbering boys.

A total of 2,602 girls passed the examinations (96.9 per cent) when compared to 1,824 boys (91 per cent). Last year the pass percentage among girls and boys stood at 97.4 per cent and 93.8 per cent.

In the Matriculation exams, too, there was a decline in pass percentage with girls outscoring boys. About 40,471 girls (92 per cent) passed the exams as against 47,957 boys (88.4 per cent). The percentage was 93.3 among girls and 90.30 among boys last year.
