Centre approves National Highway Improvement programme for NE

Aizawl, Jun 05 (UNI) The Centre has approved "Phase A" of the National Highway Improvement programme to improve National Highways (NHs) and other roads in the North Eastern region for better road connectivity to remote places.

The programme envisaged two and four lane system of about 3,251 km of NHs and improvement of about 2,500 km of road and a length of 1,888 km roads of strategic importance, official here today said.

It would also ensure connectivity of 85 district headquarters in the North Eastern states to the NHs.

"Phase A" consisted of improvement of 1,110 km of NHs and 200 km of road and lanes of strategic importance at an estimated cost of Rs 4,618 crore.

The government had also approved preparation of detailed project reports for "Phase B" of the programme involving improvement of 2,141 km of NHs and 2,981 km of road of strategic importance.

"Phase C" of this programme involved the balance length of improvement of 1,027 km of road.

National Highway Authority of India had already started work in Asom under the "East-West Corridor" of National Highway Development Project, the official sources added.
