Jaya, Amir likely to be elected unopposed in RS bypolls

Lucknow, June 4 (UNI) Film star and former Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and another SP candidate, Amir Alam Khan, are expected to be elected unopposed in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha bypolls.

Tomorrow is the last date for filing nomination. Except for these two SP candidate, no other candidate have filed their papers so far.

If Jaya wins, this would be her second entry to RS after 2004.

She had to resign the seat in March following the raging office of profit controversy.

However, Khan will make his maiden entry in the upper house. In the past, he represented Kairana in Muzzafarnagar district of West UP in Lok Sabha twice.

The main opposition BJP and Congress have already expressed their unwillingness to contest the two RS seats as elections would be held seperately.

BSP is not too keen to fight the bypolls as the winning candidate would be decided by majority vote separately for the two seats.

The scrutiny of nominations would be done on June 6, while candidates can withdraw papers till June 8. If required voting would be held on June 15.

State BJP president Keshri Nath Tripathi told UNI here as the winners would be decided separately by majority vote of the assembly hence the party was not interested in contesting the bypolls.

''Even a joint-opposition candidate will not be able to win as the SP-led coalition has the majority in the house.'' BSP state president Bakhru Ram Verma said the party was still undecided on the issue. ''It is up to the party chief Mayawati to decide.'' Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari had already clarified the party would not contest the RS bypolls.
