Buta calls for Central intervention in checking naxalism
Jalandhar, June 4 (UNI) Former Bihar Governor Buta Singh today stressed the need for the Union government to play a pro-active role in tackling the problem of insurgency and naxalite movement in some states of the country.
Talking to UNI here, the former Union Home Minister said presently the UPA Government at the centre was supporting respective state governments in handling of the situation in the troubled states. ''But what is requred was a direct Central intervention and handling, as the phenomenon had now become a threat to the internal security of the country,'' he added.
He said militancy or naxalite activities are no more being spearheaded with separatistic goals or aspirations but now the social inequality and injustice related issues had emerged as the force behind the movement. However, these activities are certainly weakening India and are backed by anti Indian elements as well, he added.
Mr Singh said that what happened in Nepal should be a warning for India and the Centre should deal with the problem directly.
He added that ongoing efforts by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had brought the Indo Pakistan relation to near normalcy. However, support to militants from Pakistan based forces had not been controlled so far,he added.
Mr Singh said that Pakistan Government had no control over the terrorist groups operating from its soil.
On a question over possibility of re-emergence of menace of terrorism in Punjab, he said that he did not see any such possibility but there was no scope for the Punjab Government to be complacent.
