State to meet expenses for Rs 2 kg rice: CM

Chennai, Jun 3 (UNI) DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the state goverment would meet on its own the additional subsidy for providing rice at Rs two per kg under the Public Distribution System.

Mr Karunanidhi launched the Rs two a kg rice scheme today on his 83rd birthday, fulfilling one of his major poll promises.

Responding to a query from newspersons on the Centre deciding to increase the issue price of rice leading to enhanced financial burden on the state, he said the state would meet the burden on its own.

Asked whether he would seek funds from the Centre during his three-day visit to New Delhi from tomorrow, Mr Karunanidhi said he would only look for good and cordial relations with the Centre.
