Protest rally against Padubidre thermal power plant
Udupi, June 3 (UNI) The Anti-Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant Committee has decided to launch a protest rally here in the first week of next month if the State Government failed to cancel the permission granted to the Nagarjuna Power Company for setting up a coal-based thermal power plant at Padubidre in this district of Karnataka.
The Committee, comprising various organisations like fishermen associations, political parties, Nadikur Jana Jagruti Samiti (NJJS) and Nagarika Seva Trust (NST), held a meeting here today and took the decision. It also decided to press for the withdrawal of cases foisted on NJJS members.
Disclosing this at a press conference here, NST Convener Somanath Nayak said the Committee was not against any gas-based power project, but only totally against coal-based thermal power project.
Coal-based project was not only harmful to the eco-sensitive coastal districts, but also endangered the lives of 20 lakh farmers and over three lakh fishermen.
BJP MP from Udupi Manorama Madhwaraj said that if her party went against the wishes of the people on the issue, she would remain with the people and even resign her parliamentary seat.
