Malkangiri, Jun 03 (UNI) Two armed Naxalites today shot dead Motu Police station Officer in-charge Durga Charan Mishra in broad day light near MV 88 weekly market.

Police said Mr Mishra and Assistant Sub-Inspector T G Bhoi had gone to the MV 88 market this morning when the two naxalites pounced on them and fired at close range killing Mr Mishra on the spot.

ASI Bhoi, however, escaped unhurt and fled from the scene. The Naxalites managed to escape soon after the incident.

The killing of the Police officer follows the recent encounter between the Orissa police and the Naxalites on Tuesday last at Teakguda, about 70 km from here in which two women naxalites were killed and three injured.

All the three injured Naxalites were arrested and later sent to the jail custody.

Malkangiri Superintendent of Police J Koel rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Two platoons of police force had been dispatched to the area to intensify the combing operation and nab the naxalites involved in the gruesome killing of the police officer.

A Kendrapada report said the Police officer had telephoned to his wife a couple of days back and told her that he would be leaving soon to attend his sister-in-law's marriage.

The police officer is survived by his mother, who is bedridden, wife, three daughters and a son.
