National Women Commn concerned about rising violence on women

Imphal, Jun 3 (UNI) The National Commission for Women has expressed concern over the increased violence on women and violation of rights in the North East.

Commission member Malini Bhattacharya here today said violence on women was not reflected in the national media, hence people were not aware of the problem.

She said the Commission has recommended to the Centre to punish those involved in the alleged rape and killing of T H Manorama who was found dead after she was apprehended by a team of 17 Assam Rifles in July 2004.

The Commission also went to Tripura to inquire into a rape case allegedly invilving the Assam Rifles personnrl, she added.

The Commission has also submitted a report on the alleged rape and torture of 25 women at Manipur's Churachandpur district by suspected militants.

She said the report was submitted to the Central government and the Commission would discuss the issue with Governor Dr S S Sidhu, state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and State Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh.

Mrs Bhattacharya said the victims had not received any medical treatment so far and many of them were young girls, who need specialised medical treatment.

She said the Commission would organise a medical camp to address the sufferings of the victims.

The Manipur government has also assured to take up necessary steps to implement the recommendations of the Commission, she said.

Special training, payment of relief, rehabilitation package, trauma counselling were recommended by the Women Commission.
